Vienna to Budapest
In the footsteps of the Danube Monarchy
A bike journey between two fascinating capitals interspersed with meadows, fields and towns. Vienna - Budapest is a journey back in time to the past of the Danube monarchy.
Your JourneyDay 1: Arrive Vienna Day 2 Vienna - Bad Deutsch-Altenburg approx. 55 km: Roll through gentle Danube pastures to Petronell, the site of Roman excavations (“Carnuntum”). Day 3 Bad Deutsch-Altenburg- Mosonmagyarovar approx. 60 km: Today you cycle a short distance through Slovakia to visit Bratislava’’s charming old town before entering Hungary at Mosonmagyarovar, the city with 17 bridges. Day 4 Mosonmagyarovar - Györ approx. 45 km: At Györ visit the old bishop fortress and cathedral. Day 5 Györ - Tata approx. 60 km: Cycle through Transdanube’s soft hilly landscape) to Kocs then Tata. Day 6 Tata - Esztergom approx. 55km: Ascend through the wooded hills of the Gerecse Mountains then roll downhill through the vineyards to Esztergom. Day 7 Esztergom - Budapest approx. 65 km: Cycle through the Danube passage to Visegrad where you take a ferry to an island and then to the town of Szentendre. From here you can go by boat or continue to cycle to Budapest. Day 8 Budapest: Arrangements terminate. TerrainAlthough you begin on the Austrian Danube bicycle path, do not expect the standard of the route to be the same in Hungary. There you will bike on side roads with little traffic.
