Turkey’s Lycian Coast By Bike & Boat

Bodrum to Fethiye or vice versa - 8 days / 7 nights, c. 250 km by bicycle

Spend a week discovering the southern coast of Turkey from Bodrum to Fethiye aboard a traditional Turkish motor sailing vessel. Touring the coast and back-country by bike, your tour guide will show you the unique natural wonders and ancient sites.

You’ll wonder at the famous rock-cut Lycian tombs of Kaunos which were cut into the cliffs between 4 and 2 BC by the Lycian people, and see the breathtaking Sakklikent Canyon. Spend your evenings in deserted bays or at quaint harbourside villages and towns enjoying their many cafes and bars.

 

Your Journey

Day 1 Bodrum (Saturday):

Arrive Bodrum boarding from 2pm. This afternoon stroll through the city‘s labyrinth of winding streets of the oriental old town, the famous bazaar and the impressive fortress before meeting onboard for dinner.

Day 2 Bodrum - Kormen - Knidos (42 km):

The first sailing trip takes us to Kormen in the early morning. Then its onshore with our bikes for our first bike tour leading us along the Datca peninsula. On a clear day you can see the Greek Islands Nissyros, Tilos and Rhodes. Before arriving in Knidos we visit one of the most impressive archaeological site in Turkey. We then moor in one of the most picturesque bays of the Turkish coast.

Day 3 Knidos - Serce Limani - Ciftlik Bay (45 km):

Enjoy this morning relaxing on the boat as we sail to a small bay on the tip of the Bozburun Peninsula. From there a remote mountain road takes us 300m up to a mountain village with a 1,500-year-old plane tree and a lively bazaar. After lunch we continue to the bay of Ciftlik where there is time to enjoy a refreshing dip in the clear blue sea.

Day 4 Ciftlik - Ekincik - Kaunos (31 km):

During breakfast we cross to the little harbour of Ekincik, starting point of today's bike ride. After cycling over a pass with spectacular views we reach the shores of Lake Koyceaiz and the opportunity to take a healing mud bath close to Sultanive. We head towards the mouth of the Dalyan River and from here we take a small boat on a 30 minute ride past the Lycian rock-cut tombs, overlooking the Dalyan delta, to our awaiting gulet.

Day 5 Kaunos - Dalaman - Sarsala Bay (42 km):

After breakfast we sail close to the ancient city of Kaunos - once on land only the ruins remain silent witness of the former wealth of the city - its a fascinating site to visit. We cycle the fertile Dalaman plains with their cotton fields and orchards before taking a break in a tea house in Dalama

Day 6 Sarsala Bay - Gemiler - Fethiye (33 km):

Enjoy this morning's sail past numerous, picturesque little islands before reaching Gemiler - also known as the island of St Nicolas where a church was built for him in the 5th Century. Back on the mainland we cycle through pinewoods to the Greek town of Kayaköy, where we spend some time here to explore the impressive town ruins on foot. We then continue on to Fethiye, where we have enough time in the evening to go on an walk to explore this lively town.

Day 7 Fethiye – Saklikent Canyon – Fethiye (27 km):

A short morning transfer by bus takes us to the starting point of today's bike ride to Cavdir. We cycle from there to the Saklikent Canyon, where a riverside restaurant invites us to refuel and relax before we explore the canyon of foot. We continue cycling to Kadikov ,then take a short transfer north to Tlos, where the fascinating rock tombs and ancient city ruins create a striking panorama. Views of the Taurus Mountains on one side and the coastline on the other. A shuttle bus takes you back to the ship in Gocek.

Day 8 Departure:

Arrangements end after breakfast.

Terrain

Day tours average 40 km through partly hilly and mountainous terrain. There will also be extended climbs. Most roads are asphalted. You can set aside a whole or half-day for swimming or relaxing on board the boat whenever you want.

Meals

7 days on a half-board basis i.e. breakfast and dinner or lunch.
