Discover a beautiful slice of Romania as you cruise along canals with floating reed islands, lagoons and lakes on Romania’s Danube Delta, the second largest and best preserved of Europe’s deltas.
Your JourneyDay 1: Arrive Bucharest at 2 pm and transfer to your barge for a welcome dinner. Day 2 Nufaru – Sfantu Gheorge (30 km) Cycle through the nature reserve of the Bestepe Hills. You will have a wonderful view deep down into the Delta. At the small fishing village of Murighiol, cruise into a maze of channels, floating islands and dense forests. Day 3 The journey to mile “0” (20 km) Cycle a gravel path with the Black Sea on the right and lush green reeds and marsh land on the left. At Sulina you will reach Mile “0” where the Danube reaches the salt of the sea. Day 4 Gulf of Musura – Crisan (20 km) Cycle along Musura Bay (a birds’ paradise) to the picturesque village of Letea where traditional houses are made of reed and loam and painted in blue. Cruise to the fishing village of Crisan. Day 5 The Fauna & Flora of the Danube Delta (rest day). Today cruise a labyrinth of narrow waterways and enjoy the incredible diversity of fauna and flora of this UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Danube Delta. Arrive the vibrant town of Tulcea. Day 6 The Abbey of the Dobrogea (27 – 34 km) Cycle gentle rolling landscape to the Orthodox nunnery, Celic Dere and the romantic Abbey of Saon, which has a distinctive windmill in a vineyard setting right on the bank of the Danube. Cycle up a ridge for a view over the extensive floodplains directly on the Ukraine border. Return to Tulcea. Day 7 Lagoon Tour to Cape Dolosman (30 – 45 km) Take a bus to the old Turkish village, Babadag, then bike to the medieval fortress of Enisala, high above the Danube with breathtaking views. Continue to the nature reserve of Cape Dolosman (which has Greek-Roman excavations of Argamum). Return to Tulcea. Day 8: Disembarkation. After breakfast transfer by bus back to the Romanian Capital, Bucharest by 2.00pm. TerrainCycle mostly on flat sandy or paved paths which can require a bit of physical fitness but the daily distances are short. |
