Alps to the Adriatic - Bike, Vistas & Wine

Self-Guided Tour - 8 Days / 7 Nights

From alpine lakes to a sun-drenched coast packed with mountain views, immense bodies of water and flowing wine. Starting at the fairytale world of Lake Bled, a glacial lake famed for its beautiful island church and clifftop castle. Your ride will take you first through alpine, Slovenia's most beautiful mountain vistas, over a high pass, along thundering rivers and out into a valley laden with vineyards. Castles and hilltop churches will be in abundance, along with great local wine and food in the Karst region (a beautiful Limestone plateau). Finally, the sunny coast awaits you with lazy promenades and beautiful Venetian architecture. This is the perfect cycling holiday for lovers of diverse landscape, good food and great local wine, and people who want to soak their feet in the warm sea after a long journey by bike.

Your Journey

Day 1 Arrive Lake Bled:

Lake Bled is one of Slovenia's must-see spots. Take a stroll around the lake and be sure not to miss the sunset over the mountains.

Day 2 Bled-Bohinjska Bistric (27-43 km)

Transfer by car to start point and cycle through alpine villages to Lake Bohini in the beautiful Triglav National Park. Take the cable car up the Vogel Mountains for spectacular views.

Day 3 Bohinj-Tolmin (35-56 km)

Today you can shorten your cycle by taking the train though the Bohini tunnel to Podbrdo or alternatively cycle over the Sorica Pass. Follow the Soca River to Tolmin.

Day 4 Tolmin - Smartno/Solkan (46 km)

Transfer by car to Kolovrat Saddle, high above the Soca Valley. End the day in a beautiful medieval village where you can stretch your legs, sip cool wine and chat with the locals.

Day 5 Solkan -Stanjel Area (40 km)

After leaving the Brda wine region reach the town of Gorizia, where the Iron Curtain once split Italy and Yugoslavia. Cycle along the border and turn inland to the vineyards of the Vipava region, and overnight in a small karst village in a beautiful rural setting.

Day 6 Stanjel Area - Divaca (48 km)

Cycle to the Lipica stud farm and visit the Lipizzaner dancing horses in their stables! Performances are also available on certain days.

Day 7 Divaca - Trieste / Muggia (46 km)

This morning visit the fascinating Unesco Skocian Caves. Cycle downhill to reach the old seaside village of Muggia. Take the city shuttle boat to the worldy port city of Trieste and relax in the city square with a full view of Trieste Bay.

Day 8:

Departure from Trieste/Muggia.

Terrain

Suitable for cyclists of moderate fitness, modest daily distances. Electric bikes can be requested.
