This tour leads you from Montpellier to Sommières, a quaint medieval town on the Vidourle River traversed by a 2000 year old Roman bridge. Cycle past lovely little villages in the region of Vaunage, then continue along quiet roads, past vineyards to Nîmes, a city endowed with well preserved Roman monuments. From Nimes ride along the Rhône-Sète Canal through the untouched salt marshes and inland lakes of the Camargue to the medieval town of Aigues-Mortes. From Aigues-Mortes, follow the beaches of the Mediterranean Sea to Montpellier where your tour will end in gastronomic style at the best restaurant in town.
Your JourneyDay 1 Montpellier: Dine and stay at Montpellier hotel. Day 2 Montpellier - Sommières Meeting at the hotel reception around 9.30am for a welcome briefing and handover of bikes. Bike through the beautiful Languedoc landscape past little villages to Castries where one of the prettiest chateau of the Languedoc can be found, called the "Versailles of Languedoc". Continue to Sommières, a little medieval town where a Roman bridge crosses the River Vidourle. Cycling: Approximately 40km Day 3 Sommières - Nimes: Today you cross the famous Vaunage, where the protestants fought against the troops of King Louis XIVth from 1703 to 1705. Cycle through romantic villages to Nîmes, the "Rome of Gaule". Cycling: Approximately 30km Day 4 Nimes –Aigues-Mortes: Cycle along the Rhône-Sète Canal past little villages to Aigues-Mortes, a splendid walled town surrounded by water and the salt tables of the Camargue. This afternoon, lose yourself in the shops and narrow streets of the old town. Cycling: Approximately 50km Day 5 Aigues –Mortes –Camargue-Aigues -Mortes: The Camargue National Park is one of the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Provence. The area is around 350,000 acres of wetlands, pastures and salt flats formed by the delta of the Rhône River. The region has a unique ecological balance and is home to many pink flamingos and small white horses - an ancient breed indigenous to this area. These horses are traditionallty ridden by the gardians or ‘Camargue cowboys’. Cycling: Approximately 30km Day 6 Aigues-Mortes- Montpellier: Today’s scenery includes coastal vists, sandy beaches and the Rhône-Sète Canal meandering through the lakes. Stop for a drink in the little fishing town of Le Grau du Roi before arriving in the seaside resort of La Grande Motte and its futuristic architecture from the 1960s! .Arrive back at your hotel in Montpellier and enjoy your final dinner in one of the finest restaurants in town - an absolute gastronomic highlight to end your tour. Cycling: Approximately 50km Day 7 Montpellier: Your tour ends after breakfast TerrainCycling on flat and mostly quiet roads, the terrain is sometimes slightly undulating.
