The Canal du Midi in the South of France is undoubtedly the most beautiful canal in Europe. This canal, with its 64 locks, winds its way through the delightful landscapes and villages for approximately 245 km. Even today, time seems to stand still there. There is no sign of cars or industry.
Your JourneyDay 1 Montpellier: Arrival in Montpellier, the capital of Languedoc-Rousillon regionand the 8th largest city in France. Day 2 Montpellier – Sete (cycling 45km): Meet at 9.30 a.m at your hotel for a tour briefing and to receive your bikes. Starting in the lively university town of Montpellier, this easy day cycle follows the River Lez passing through a bird sanctuary showcasing flocks of flamingos to Palavas and following sun-kissed Mediterranean beaches to the charming town of Sète. Day 3 Sete - Béziers (cycling 60km): Today you cycle along the beach road to Cap d’ Agde to visit the old town and cathedral, before continuing along the Canal du Midi to Béziers. Day 4 Béziers - Narbonne (cycling 45km): Today’s journey takes you via a canal bridge over the river Orb, past locks in Fonséranes, Ensérune and Capestang. Continue on side roads and country lanes through vineyards to Narbonne. Day 5 Narbonne - Homps (cycling 40km): At Narbonne visit the Palace of the Archbishop, Gothic cathedral, subterranean Roman storage installations then travel along the Canal de la Robine, on side roads and along the Canal du Midi to Homps. Day 6 Homps – Carcassonne (cycling 60km): Cycle along the Canal du Midi and on side roads to the medieval city of Carcassonne with its’ spectacularly sited castle. Day 7 Carcassonne: Arrangements terminate after breakfast. Travel by bus or train back to Sète (not included in cost and not available on Saturdays from 5 July to 23 August 2014.). Alternatively extend the trip and cycle to Toulouse. TerrainFlat, sometimes slightly undulating, especially the extension to the reservoir St. Ferreol, suitable for everyone. The towpath is only partially paved, otherwise sandy and pebble pathways and little used roads. |
