ITINERARY

Day 1 Christchurch – Hokitika Cycling 33 kms

Join your group in Christchurch to drive inland across the picturesque Canterbury Plains, and via Arthur's Pass with its towering, snow-capped peaks. Reach the old gold town of Ross on the other side of the Southern Alps for our first ride on the West Coast Wilderness Trail. A stretch of rail trail leads to Treetop Walkway (optional) where you can see Lake Mahinapua's rainforest and wetlands from on high. Continue to Hokitika, known for pounamu (greenstone) and other arts & crafts, where you'll spend two nights.

Day 2 Hokitika – Lake Kaniere circuit Cycling 40 kms

Cycle through rural country to reach the bush-lined Kaniere water race and the lake, nestled in forested foothills. Follow the lake's shores to the small township of Kokatahi then on to Hokitika Gorge. Take a short walk to see its granite boulders and swirling, surreal turquoise waters. Return to Hokitika.

Day 3 Lake Kaniere – Kumara Cycling 55 kms

From Lake Kaniere, cycle rural roads to the dedicated Wilderness Trail. It then crosses a swing bridge, followed by a kilometre of switchback climbing to reach a highpoint and more superb riding. Follow water races, bush tracks and reservoir roads taking in the spectacular views as we gradually descend to our overnight at Kumara and the beautiful historic hotel.

Day 4 Kumara – Punakaiki Cycling 30 kms

Ride north to Greymouth on a riverside and coastal pathways. The old road and rail bridge is just one highlight as we head towards the town centre. Wander the town or have an optional visit to Monteith's Brewery. Drive the stunning coastal highway to explore Paparoa National Park with its dramatic limestone gorge. Walk the Truman Track (1.4 km return) through striking sub-tropical forest to reach a rugged, yet spectacular beach. Our final walk is around Punakaiki's Dolomite Point, famous for its Pancake Rocks and thundering blowholes.

Day 5 Punakaiki – Christchurch Cycling 25 kms

Before we leave the West Coast enjoy a final bike ride along quiet roads to reach Moana on the shores of Lake Brunner. Those who choose the train journey, will board the TranzAlpine, rated as one of the top train rides in the world, for an unforgettable journey across the Southern Alps and the Canterbury Plains back to Christchurch.
