The Rhine Bike Path - Lake Constance to Basel

Self Guided 8 Days / 7 Nights

Cycle one of the prettiest parts of the Rhine from the Swiss shores of lovely Lake Constance and the romantic Upper Rhein in Eastern Switzerland to Basel. This route along the Rhine passes wine and fishing villages, and medieval towns such as Stein Am Rhein. At Schaffhausen you will see the impressive Rhine Falls, largest in Europe and maybe take the little boat out to the island in the middle of them. Finish your journey exploring the Old Town and magnificent museums of Basel.

Your Journey

Day 1 Arrival in Chur

Allow time to explore the oldest city in Switzerland.

Day 2 Chur – Feldkirch 65 km

Cycle along the Rhine through the Bündner Herrschaft, one of Switzerland’s best wine producing areas. Continue through ‘Heidi’ country across Liechtenstein, to the Austrian medieval town of Feldkirch, where the Schattenburg Castle towers above.

Day 3 Feldkirch – Altstätten – Gais – St. Gallen 45 km

Train from Altstätten up to Gais in Appenzellerland where trails lead through alpine pasture to UNESCO World Heritage St Gallen.

Day 4 St. Gallen – Arbon – Constance 45 km

Descend to Lake Constance and cycle past charming Swiss villages to Constance.

Day 5 Constance – Stein am Rhein – Schaffhausen 50km

Cycle the picturesque south shore to Stein am Rhein - famous for its beautifully preserved Old Town featuring painted facades and half-timbered houses. Follow the Rhine to Schaffhausen.

Day 6 Schaffhausen - Rhine Falls - Waldshut-Tiengen 60 km

Cycle to the impressive Rhine Falls where you can take a boat to the island in the middle to climb up to the top of the rock. Next is the island monastery Rheinau.

Day 7: Waldshut – Rheinfelden - Basel 50 km

Cross Europe’s longest covered wooden bridge at Bad Säckingen and stop at the town’s two surprising museums. Continue along the Rhine to Rheinfelden then by train to Basel.

Day 8

Arrangements end.

Terrain

Easy – mostly flat but with some hilly sections along the Rhine.
