An enchanting bike tour along the German/Austrian Danube mostly with a helpful tail wind behind, you will cycle along lush green river banks, through small, dreamy villages in the impressive Danube landscapes. Discover the natural wonder of the "Great Loop” (a swift 180º turn!) and immerse yourself in the Wachau with its vineyard terraces and enchanted castles and monasteries. Then Vienna – an abundance of sights and music!

Your JourneyDay 1: Passau - Engelhartszell Allow time to visit the world's greatest church organ at the Stephansdom and Passau’s charming Old Town. Embarkation is between 4 – 5.00 pm. Enjoy dinner on board and an evening cruise to Engelhartszell. Day 2: Engelhartszall - Aschach –- "Great Loop" – Linz (cycling 40-46 km) (Optional city tour of Linz) This morning sample some of the special cordials and liqueurs in the Trappist monastery in Engelhartszell which supposedly have great healing powers. Cycle downstream through pretty villages and beautiful landscapes. Take the little ferry boat through the Schlogener loop where the river makes a very abrupt 180 degree turn. Overnight this evening in Linz. Day 3: Linz – Mauthausen – Grein (cycling 36 - 40 km) Morning cruise to Mauthausen where you can visit the memorial KZ-Mauthausen. The Celtic town of Mitterkirchen gives you an insight of the past. Easy cycling along the Danube or take the alternative route, "Klam Castle" through the beautiful back country of the "Strudengau" which is slightly hilly, but a fantastic landscape. At Grein you can take an optional visit to Greinburg Castle. Day 4: Grein – Melk – Tulln (cycling 51 km) Experience a diverse landscape firstly of the Strudengau – a narrow point of the Danube. The valley expands from Persenbeug and the bike tour leads you further to Melk with its gorgeous Baroque monastery of the Benedictine brethren. Today's final destination is Tulln, a market garden area and where the famous Art Nouveau artist Egon Schiele was born (museum). Day 5: Tulln – Vienna - Nussdorf (cycling 35 km) On Vienna’s doorstep is the monastery of Klosterneuburg. You can see the cupola of this 900 year old Baroque building from the distance. "Kahlenbergerdorf" with its wine taverns is definitely worth a visit. After a stroll through the vineyards, enjoy the panoramic view over Vienna. During the city tour by bus and foot (optional, not included) in the afternoon, you will pass most of the numerous and famous sights of this beautiful city. Day 6: Free day in Vienna (optional city tour by bike & Waltz and Operetta concert) Be sure to see the most famous places of interest: the Prater; St. Stephens Cathedral; Hofburg Palace; the gorgeous boulevard "Ringstraβe" with the Burgtheatre; the State Opera House; and the Town Hall. Make sure you ‘squeeze’ in one of the famous Viennese coffee bars. During the night sail to Durnstein or Rossatz. Day 7: Wachau – Pochlarn, (cycling 40-50 km) (optional wine-tasting) Your last biking day is one of the highlights! Amidst small villages, apricot trees, vineyards, castles, monasteries and ruins, this gentle hilly landscape enchants everybody. A mighty ruin looms above the small Baroque town of Dürnstein, while the blue tower of the monastery church is a landmark of the Wachau. In the evening enjoy a farewell dinner and cocktail on board. Day 8: Saturday, Tour ends in Passau Take a last look at the Schlögener Schlinge ("Great Loop") before arriving at Passau. Arrival is about 11 am, disembarkation half an hour later. We recommend you arrange connecting travel from noon onwards. TerrainEasy - the cycle route is completely flat, and ideal for bikers with less experience, leisure cyclists and children. |
