Budapest to Krakow

GUIDED & INDEPENDENT 8 Days/7 Nights 307kms

Cycling through Hungary, Slovakia & Poland. Throughout history people have traded amber along this route leading through Hungary, Slovakia and Poland.

On this tour, ride from the artist's town of Szentendre biking the Danube Bend to the old mining town of Szentendre Bankska Stiavnica into the Tatras where the cycling is more demanding, but the views are superb. Your final destination Krakow rivals Prague as a city of fine monuments.
 

Your Journey

Day 1 Arrive Budapest:

Travel by subway to the picturesque town Szentendre.

Day 2 Szentendre / Esztergom (51 km):

Cycle along the Danube. Challenging option of the climb to Visegrad's crag-top castle. In Esztergom, allow time to visit the monumental basilica.

Day 3 Esztergom / Sturovo/ Dudince (59 km): 

Enter Slovakia across the Danube and cycle easy rolling hills to Dudince.

Day 4 Dudince / Banska Stiavnica (40 km): 

Mountain cycling today that can be shortened or a transfer provided to Banska Stiavnica, a UNESCO World Heritage town and one of the best stopovers on the Amber Trail.

Day 5 Banska Stiavnica / Kremnica / Banska Bystrica (37 km):

Optional rest day or choose to cycle a challenging section with two ascents or take a train ride with wonderful views of Kremnica, where the castle dominates the town. Transfer to Banska Bystrica to see the old part of the town under restoration.

Day 6 Banska Bystrica / Liptovska Osada / Liptovsky Mikulas (44 km):

Transfer to Liptovska Osada and enroute stop at the small mountain village of Vlkolinec, a UNESCO World Heritage site for its traditional Slovak architecture. Cycle the very challenging areas of the Lower Tatras.

Day 7 Liptovsky Mikulas / Dolny Kubin (47 km): 

Cycle through the pretty Chocsky and Oravsky Hills. See hand-made rug making in the town of Malatina and in the town of Lestiny, see a wooden church made without one single nail. Transfer to Sucha Beskidzka in Poland.

Day 8 Sucha Beskidzka - Kalwaria Zebrzydowska - Krakow (29 km):

Highlight today is Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, an imposing Bernadine Monastery and pilgrimage site. Transfer to Krakow.

Day 9 Krakow:

Visit the Wawei Castle; the Old Market Square; the Kazimierz Jewish Quarter; the town walls and Royal Way; as well as the pubs, cafes, theatres and restaurants. Arrangements conclude after breakfast.

Terrain

Moderate to challenging, however there are transfers available on days 4 and 5 to avoid the steep climbs on these 2 hardest days. Be aware there is an 11km climb on day 6. A back-up vehicle accompanies the guided tour to offer lifts if required.

Meals

Breakfast daily. Dinners included on guided tour.
