Maribor is the 2012 European Capital of Culture. The trip through the north-east of Slovenia has it all – accommodation in hotels with thermal water springs where you can relax after days’ cycling. Cycling through vineyards, passing wine cellars with great white wine or taking a snack in a little roadside inn! Those who have only passing interest in wine may be more interested in old towns, mighty castles, stork nests on chimneys...
Day 1 Arrive in Maribor:
Second largest Slovene town with a lovely old centre situated on the banks of the Drava River. The Vinag Wine Cellar covers 2,000m2 and has 2.5 km of tunnels crammed with wooden barrels, concrete cisterns, bottles and the valuable wine archives. It is in Maribor that the oldest producing grape vine in the world exists at over 400 years
Day 2 Maribor - Ptuj (29 km)
Cycle across fields and along the banks of Drava to the town of Ptuj, the oldest Slovene town with Roman ruins, temples and a Medieval castle. Try the Traminec white wine at the Ptuj wine cellar.
Day 3 Ptuj - Jeruzalem (50 km)
Flat cycling with one sharp climb of 100m/330 ft. Enroute make stops to admire Dornava and Nedelja Baroque castles and visit the wine cellars of Ormoz, on the border with Croatia. A wine tasting in the house cellar is included at your hotel.
Day 4 Jeruzalem - Moravske Toplice (44 km + Sidetrip of 8 km)
Bike typically scenic Slovene vineyard area stopping enroute at a floating mill, pottery workshop, Jerusalem church and charming little wine cellars.
Day 5 Moravske Toplice (25 km or 50 km)
Rest day or optional easy circuit ride towards the Hungarian border to Bukovnica Lake.
Day 6 Moravske Toplice - Cerkvenjak (41 km)
Cycle through flat, rolling countryside to Murska Sobota castle then cross the River Mura by an old fashioned float to reach the northern Slovene town of Lenart. Taste of the local wines in the house cellar of your hotel.
Day 7 Cerkvenjak - Maribor (36 km)
Cycle a hilly landscape among vineyards pass many Slovene rural villages and farms to reach Maribor.
Departure from Maribor by train to the capital Ljubljana or South to Croatia (not included).
Suitable for cyclists of basic fitness, modest daily distances. Electric bikes can be requested.
